Shore AC Masters Women Rev It Up at Terri Roemer 10K
UPDATE, October 22, 2025: Shore AC had an incomplete women's 40+ team. Kim Anicito was not included on the team roster that was submitted 2 days before the race. My apologies!
We had Lady Luck riding on the dashboard of our car for the Terri Roemer 10K race in Paramus. A week or two prior, we lacked sufficient ladies for any team entry in this masters women's championship event. But as race day neared, good fortune flourished. Several gals registered. Plus, two ladies graciously switched their registrations from the 5K to the 10K race. Presto! We suddenly had a team in each of three age groups: 40+, 50+ and 60+. Come ride with us as we recount this exciting adventure!
The Shore AC women's 60+ team exemplified our good fortunes. Though it featured only the bare minimum of three runners for a team, these ladies outran the competition. SAC long-timer Diane Rothman paved the way, laying down speedy 49:10 to get the team rolling. Rookie Patty Kavanagh careened lickety-split through the winding course towards a fine 54:39 finish as second team scorer. Competing in her new age 70-74 age group, club veteran Susan Stirrat put the pedal to the metal and crossed in 55:40. In doing so, she not only secured victory for the W60+ team, but she drove away with age group victory, too! Brava, ladies!
Pre-race expectations painted a rosy picture for the Shore AC women's 50+ squad. First place appeared likely. But luck sometimes turns. In this case, it fell flat -- literally. Freshman sensation Ann Kim took a hard spill during the race and was unable to finish. That eliminated one of our top two prospects. The other, fellow 50+ rocket Becky Keenan, fulfilled expectations with a superb 46:10. With Rothman and Kavanagh completing team scoring and Stirrat providing all-important backup, our 50+ crew snared second place. While perhaps not the result that we hoped, it was nevertheless a great accomplishment!
As for the Shore AC women's 40+ crew, they rolled inexorably to their anticipated victory despite the loss of Ann Kim. Brilliant newcomer Allison Lemanksi spearheaded their charge, burning rubber as she sped through the hilly 10K course. She finished third overall among women with a smoking time of 43:27. After Keenan powered through the finish line as second team scorer, frequent racer Kim Anicito shut the door on 40+ team rivals. Kim's time of 49:58 represented another step on her steady climb back to top levels of competition. It was also plenty good enough to secure the team's victory. Hooray!
Special congratulations to Shore AC U40 female athlete Michelle Navarro on her overwhelming win in the 10K race. Michelle's scorching time of 38:25 vanquished the rest of the field by almost 5 minutes.
Many thanks to Reno Stirrat for serving as team captain at this race.
