Shore AC Ladies Tidy Up with Clean Sweep at Spring Distance Classic 15K Race
It is a time-honored rite of spring: the top-down cleaning that leaves a place shining like a leprechaun's gold. Today, the ladies of Shore Athletic Club demonstrated how it's done. They got busy at the sound of the gun, wasting no time as they swept to victory in every age group that they contested in their kick-off USATF-NJ Long Distance Running Team Grand Prix race: namely, the Spring Distance Classic 15K. If medals had been presented, our gals would have been flashing plenty of gold!
How did these fine lassies accomplish their mission? With a spring in their step, of course! Let's begin our story with the age 60+ ladies. Thanks to remarkable depth in this age group, Shore AC was able to field two 60+ teams. 2024 National 60-64 Age Group Champion Suzanne La Burt spearheaded the A team charge as she screamed like a banshee through the course in a stunning 1:02:10. Philadelphia Phillies hostess Donna Grocki batted next and slugged a towering 1:08:30 over the fence as second team scorer. When the steadily improving Leslie Nowicki cruised over the finish line with a strong 1:22:46, the outcome was cemented. Our ladies had won, beating the second-place team by 11 minutes. Brava, ladies!
As for the Shore AC W60+ B team, newcomer Marie Capdevielle guided the gals to a third place finish out of five teams. Marie nailed an impressive 1:20:52 to punctuate her debut with the team. Second-year stalwart Tammy Grossberndt tackled the long course with determination, which paid off with a solid time of 1:32:33. A very brave Luz Ravines overcame stinging knee and back pains to cross the finish line in 1:53:21 and ensure that the team met the minimum requirement of three finishers. These ladies garnered 3 valuable points for Shore AC in the 2025 Club Grand Prix.
Shore AC fans expressed worry about our women's 50+ team in advance of the race. After all, we had just one woman registered in the 50-59 age range. But that one gal, namely Rebecca Keenan, was all that we needed -- in addition to our 60+ ladies. (USATF-NJ LDR Grand Prix rules allow masters-age runners to compete on two age group teams.) With La Burt and Grocki paving the way for our W50+ A team, Keenan roared through the finish chute less than 30 seconds behind Grocki to complete team scoring. Their margin of victory exceeded 15 minutes. Nowicki added excellent insurance as backup runner, such that victory would still have been achieved had Grocki or Keenan not finished.
Meanwhile, the dynamic W50+ B team trio of Capdevielle, Grossberndt and Ravines brought home seventh place within a field of eight teams. By doing so, they chalked up another Grand Prix point for the club.
A healthy turnout of young women intensified the competition in the younger age groups. It included three fresh faces on Raritan Valley's W40+ D team who brought some serious heat. Fortunately, Shore AC countered with a quartet of 40-49 fillies who could help outrun the RVRR newcomers. Karen Dos Santos surreptitiously stunned her foes by starting out slowly and gradually accelerating. Her scintillating final time of 1:03:18 put our W40+ team nearly 4 minutes ahead of the RVRR squad. Teammate Lindsay Bergman put her pedal to the metal and drove swiftly to a spectacular 1:05:34, widening our gap to 6 minutes. When Keenan crossed seconds later, our Shore AC ladies had earned another team gold! Insurance runner Ariana Susan made her debut with the Shore AC LDR Program memorable by fashioning a lovely 1:20:09. Paleontologist Kim Anicito shelled out a tasty 1:23:43 as second backstop. Way to go, gals!
Pre-race competitive analysis had indicated that we would face our biggest challenge in the Open Women division. Sure enough, it was frightfully close! Raritan Valley's crew featured four young sprites. Their A team averaged 1:10:05 per runner. Could we beat it? Thankfully for the ladies in white singlets, we had Emma Cary. She emulated her famous mother, Nora Cary, by storming the course in 57:11 and winning the women's race by a margin of 3 minutes. When the contributions of Dos Santos, Bergman, Susan and Anicito were added in, our Shore AC Open Women team scored an average of 1:09:59 per runner. We had edged RVRR by a mere 6 seconds per runner. The ladies had found their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
