Shore AC Leads Parade at Ridgewood 10K
Memorial Day 2025 brought American beauty to Ridgewood, New Jersey. Old Glory, framed by azure skies, drew loving eyes as our national anthem was sung. And within the large crowd of runners gathered at the starting line for the Ridgewood 10-kilometer race, Shore AC harriers dressed in patriotic red, white and blue (or, more accurately, white, blue and red) singlets prepared to do their duty. That was: run like the wind!
At stake were standings in the USATF New Jersey Paul Miller Auto Group LDR Grand Prix Open Men and Open Women categories. Shore AC held a slim 1-point lead among Open Women teams while occupying second place among Open Men squads. Could they vault into first place in Open Men while padding their lead in Open Women? As they say in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave: anything is possible!
OPEN WOMEN
Let's begin our account in the Open Women category. Shore AC was fortunate to have enough ladies for three teams. And how proud they made us! The "A" and "B" teams took first and second place, while the "C" team outran "B" and "C" teams from three other clubs. Our "A" crew took the checkered flag with racing machine Emma Cary out front scorching the streets in 38:08. Young master Karen dos Santos churned her 43-year-old legs like someone half her age as she skewered the course in 38:42. Next for our premier platoon came the toast of Red Bank, Michelle Navarro, who tore across the finish line in 39:15. A mere half-minute later, 62-year-old phenomenon Suzanne La Burt left spectators agog at her unbelievable sub-40-minute time of 39:47. Suzanne finished just 23 seconds away from the 60-64 age group American record of 39:24 for a 10K road race. WOW!!! Rookie speedster Katie Karshner wrapped up team scoring with a very solid 42:11. Living legend Nora Cary served as the team's lone backup with a pedestrian (for her!) 46:13. Nora deserved to take it easy, having broken the 70-74 age group American record for an 8K road race just two days prior. Brava, ladies!
In a vivid display of depth, our Shore AC Open Women "B" team barely edged out the two best "A" teams from other clubs. The amazing Laura DeLea steeled her aching body and pounded out a superb 45:00 to spearhead her team's attack and garner 2nd place in the 55-59 age group. Freshman phenom Ann Kim followed suit, spinning a fantastic 45:54 as second scorer and 3rd 55-59 woman. Hot on Ann's heels came emerging sensation Rebecca Keenan in 45:56. SAC fans were still cheering when suddenly Pam Ricker appeared with a stunning time of 46:10 to reach the podium in her 60-64 age group. New member Lori Kilmurray celebrated her first team race in a Shore AC singlet by winning her 45-49 age group with a superb 47:01. Providing all-important backup was Maureen Massell, whose excellent 49:05 would have placed her fourth in the 55-59 age group had she not been ranked in the 50-54 age group by mistake. Well done, ladies!
Inspired by their sisters' winning spirit, the women of the "C" team caught fire as well. They proved to be the best of all "C" teams in the skirmish. Converted racewalker Cristina Rodriguez lit the team's first match by running a stupendous 50:17. First-year firecracker Marie Capdeville exploded with a lovely 52:31, while veteran trooper Susan Stirrat scored a scintillating 54:47. Recent recruit Tammy Grossberndt delighted in hacking minutes off of her 10K time by crossing in 1:01:21. A profile in courage took shape when Luz Ravines completed the 10K race in 1:08:40, having been cleared by her doctor the day before to resume racing. Great to have you back, Luz! Thanks to the efforts of the entire "C" team, they contributed 3 points to our 2025 Grand Prix total. Hooray!
OPEN MEN
What, you ask, about our Yankee doodle dandies? Like the lasses, the lads emblazoned the scoreboard with bomb-bursting success. Rising above all was the "A" team. Recent college graduate Kyle Spector lit the fuse, launching a spectacular 33:38. Seasoned soldier John Larkin scored a superb 36:26 to earn his stripes. Seconds later, a roar erupted from the crowd as 59-year-old rookie missile Carlos Nunes struck a stellar 36:35, good for first place in his 55-59 age group. Several blinks of an eye later, sturdy knight Billy Washer galloped across the timing mats in 36:47. By now, Shore AC held 20-minute leads over nearest competitors Clifton, Fleet Feet / Essex, North Jersey Masters and the Shore AC "B" team, all of whom were within 5 minutes of each other. When famous 64-year-old ace Rick Lee rocketed across the finish line in 37:19, our "A" team took their stand atop the hill savoring sweet victory. Sharpshooter Frank Novak bagged a marvelous 38:08 as first insurance runner, while rabbit Mark Minervini loped leisurely through the lovely course on marathon-weary legs and logged a 48:53 as second backstop. Congratulations on the victory, men!
As mentioned above, the Shore AC Open Men "B" team fought a pitched battle with the "A" teams from three other clubs. Although they finished fifth, our boys came within 4 minutes of second place Clifton Road Runners. Golden-aged sensation Mike Salamone piloted the plane, thundering across the finish line in 40:15 as first team scorer. The ever-improving Denis Keenan took another leap, throwing down an amazing 42:08. Hot on his heels came "PR man" John Delaney. John has been breaking personal records seemingly every race this year. Although no record fell for him on this day, John still awed spectators with a jaw-dropping 42:12. Moments later, true survivor Tim McQueen carried his team to unexpected heights by scoring a stirring 42:25. That set the stage for our true veteran, 70-year-old ex-Marine Reno Stirrat, to plant the flag with a phenomenal 43:52. Volunteer extraordinaire Mike DiLeva (45:38) and marathon man Jamie Button (46:49) cemented the team's fifth-place finish with their insurance contributions. Bravo, guys!
That thirst for accomplishment extended to our Shore AC Open Men "C" team. They beat "A" and "B" teams from three other clubs. Stirring septuagenarian Peter Auteri brought onlookers to their feet with a furious finishing kick to notch 47:44. Age group cohort Ken Wilson motored down the chute seconds later in 48:04. Team captain Scott Linnell surprised himself by running his fastest 10K in almost 2 years, tripping the clock in (a still woeful) 49:12. The legendary Bill Bosmann found some juice in his 74-year-old legs and scored a solid 52:34. Rocking octogenarian Jack Frame showed off moves like Mick Jagger on his way to an incredible time of 54:57. Our all-important insurance man, Carl Richko, not only protected our team's eighth place with his 57:28, he won the 75-79 age group. Hooray, Carl! Hooray, "C" team!
