Shore AC Breaks the Ice on Opening Day with a Smashing Win in the Penguin Pace 5K
The USATF New Jersey Association's team race calendar for 2025 sent shivers down more than a few spines when it was recently released. Normally, team racing doesn't begin until the end of March. By then, roads are clear of winter's ice, and rapidly lengthening days boost the chances of mild weather. But a race on February 1st? That sure seemed risky -- and sounded awfully cold!!!
Moreover, would enough Shore AC athletes show up? A segment of our ranks flies south for the winter. Many more have other commitments on winter weekends or are taking much-deserved breaks from racing. Thankfully, enough SAC pack members waddled onto our ice shelf to give us a team. We numbered 15: 9 men and 6 women. Opposing flocks mostly outnumbered us. Notably, the berg where Fleet Feet / Essex gathered teemed with over 30 birds. Clifton's floe bore a similarly sized crowd.
No matter. Once the gun sounded and we dove into the race, the key was how fast for our age we could swim -- er, run :-). My, how us harriers in white sped! When results were tallied, Shore AC sported the first-place female and male age graders. In fact, it was a SAC sweep on the men's side, as we claimed first, second and third on the PLP charts. Our ladies made waves of their own, nabbing first, third and seventh.
Leading all runners in age grading was 2024 USATF Masters National Athlete of the Year Nora Cary. Her stupendous time of 22:20 rendered the 69-year-old a world-class age grading once again, nailing 92.95% and getting her Shore AC co-ed team off to a magnificent start. Golden-year speedster Mike Salamone notched Shore AC's next co-ed scoring position. Using the race as a high-tempo training run, our 65-year-old sensation breezed home in 20:25 to score a superb 82.53% PLP. SAC Hall of Famer and former USATF Masters National Athlete of the Year Reno Stirrat crossed in 21:44, equating to a stellar 80.17% as our third scorer. Karen Dos Santos continued our hit parade by placing first overall among women. Her scintillating time of 19:30 bought the 43-year-old a terrific 79.06% age grading. Our fifth scorer could probably swim with actual penguins: Ken Wilson interleaves his road races with triathlons. Today, Ken tucked just under 23 minutes with a 22:59, good enough to give the 73-year-old a magnificent 78.92% PLP. Team scoring was wrapped up by 2023 USATF Masters National LDR Age 65-69 Champion Susan Stirrat. The 69-year-old's 27:01 clocking corresponded to an excellent age grading of 76.85%.
The Shore AC team featured a bevy of outstanding backup runners. Pete Auteri nabbed third place in his 70-74 age group with a fine 23:14 that earned him an age grading of 78.07%. Rebecca Keenan won her 50-54 age group with a ripping 21:33, picking up a magnificent 76.44% PLP in the process. Meanwhile, team captain Scott Linnell hardly earned his stripes, fading in the final stretch and ceding third place in his 65-69 age group to rival Charlie Slaughter. Scott crossed in 22:55 for a 74.38% AG. John Delaney put on a far better show, nailing a speedy 20:49 to earn 73.03% PLP. Frank Novak swung for the fences, launching a towering 18:42 to place third overall! Alas, his young age of 32 left Frank with an age grading of 68.87%. Bob Shields celebrated his return from injury with a solid 22:30 to earn 68.71% PLP. Denis Keenan delivered a very strong 21:17, rating him at 68.04%. Tammy Grossberndt began her Shore AC career with a fine 29:19 -- good for third in the 60-64 age group -- and a corresponding 63.83% age grading. Welcome, Tammy! Keep it up! Finally, we had a truly brave heart appear. Luz Ravines woke up feeling ill but raced anyway. Her determination to finish got her through a tough patch at Mile 2. Kudos to her for completing the course in 32:05 and collecting a 59.81% age grading. Brava to Luz and the ladies! Bravo to the men!
