Shore AC Masters "in the Zone" at the Mile in Norwood
You know when you're in the "zone". Stride is strong, breathing is under control and you're on track for a solid time. What a feeling!
Many of our Shore AC athletes experienced that sought-after state at the Mile By Impact Zone event. Smiles abounded after the races were completed. Our only regret: practically all of us were old. Consequently, the results that made us feel so proud didn't count for much in these USATF-NJ Open Men and Open Women Championships. But had team scores been based on age grading, there can be no doubt which teams would have won: Shore AC's!
Open Men
Actually, the Shore AC Open Men team ranked surprisingly well. We finished in second place out of five teams. Lone U40 athlete Nicholas Reid spearheaded the team effort. Running in the Open Men heat, Nick pounded out an astounding 4:53 for his first one-mile race in the past six years. Golden-aged Mike Salamone followed with a superb 5:52 in the Masters Men heat, evidence that a productive running career can continue even at age 65. Sophomore standout Jim Linn added irrefutable proof when he crushed the course in 5:53 at the ripe old age of 72. Jim not only clobbered his 70-79 age group competition, he also stood atop the age grading charts with an incredible 94.66%. Seconds later, Shore AC volunteer extraordinaire Mike DiLeva continued his recovery from COVID with a scintillating 5:59.5. Team scoring came to a rousing conclusion when Mike Connolly burst across the timing strip with a magnificent 6:16.
The Shore AC Open Men crew received outstanding backup from five distinguished greybeards. Leading the insurance runners was the legendary Reno Stirrat. Feeling much younger than his 71 years, Reno hammered 11 seconds off of his time from last year in the same race to register a phenomenal 6:19. Shadowing Reno's surge invigorated recent slug Scott Linnell. His 6:22 pared 20 seconds from last year's sluggish result and handed Scott a satisfying PLP of 82.3%. New club member Frank Fazio celebrated his inaugural race for Shore AC with a solid 6:41. Hot on Frank's heels came master craftsman Ken Wilson, who expertly assembled a handsome 6:52. Last but certainly not least, our indefatigable octogenarian Jack Frame nailed an unbelievable 7:37. Jack's age grading of 89.5% put him on the PLP podium in third place. Bravo to one and all!

May 17, 2025, Norwood, NJ: Nicholas Reid, our only U40 runner at this "Open" race, guns for the finish line and a magnificent time of 4:53 -- especially considering that this was Nick's first one-mile race in six years!

Open Women
A cynic might scoff at the last-place finish of our Shore AC Open Women's squad, but we were delighted simply to put a team on the starting line. When this team captain initially submitted team rosters the day before the race, the women's team was incomplete, having only three names. But with some last-second scrambling, we managed to add two more ladies. That brought our headcount up to the minimum of five for an Open team. Game on!
Septuagenarian sensation Nora Cary, who holds world age group records at 10 km, 15 km and 10 miles, came within 6 seconds of Jeannie Rice's American record of 6:24 at this race. Nora's 6:30 got the team off to a great start. Shore AC fans were still dancing a happy jig when club veteran Diane Rothman rocketed across the finish line in 6:48, nipping age group rival Betty Otarola by 1 second. Fellow 65-69 age grouper and prized rookie Marie Capdevielle overcame a 3-week bout of bronchitis to notch a solid time of 7:30. Another call-up from sick bay, Leslie Nowicki, shook off a persistent head cold and squeezed out a very respectable 7:50. Seconds later, running stalwart Susan Stirrat capped off team scoring with a fine 8:02. Well done, ladies! With the six Grand Prix points earned at this race, the Shore AC Open Women team maintained first place in the Grand Prix!
