Rah Mirth at Haworth: Shore AC Masters Men Sweep 5K
It has become a familiar sound at USATF-NJ races: Shore AC teams being announced as winners, and a rousing round of huzzahs in response! This year's Haworth 5K was no exception. Shore AC teams were pronounced champions in every contested age group, from 40+ through 70+. With each announcement, the awards venue echoed with the proverbial "Rah!"
Let's recount the exciting race by starting with our septuagenarians. Human bullet train Jim Linn set the tenor, hurtling down the tracks -- er, road -- to reach the first mile marker in 6 minutes flat. Jim's 72-year-old body couldn't sustain that pace, but he still finished with an astounding time of 21:09. Former USATF Masters National Athlete of the Year Reno Stirrat proved that he can still fly, breaking the timing plane in 21:45. Top-notch 74-year-old Peter Auteri following in 23:51 to complete team scoring. Rock-solid insurance was added by potent runners Jack Frame (26:58), Bill Bosmann (27:00) and Dan Murphy (29:13). So effective were they that, had Frame, Bosmann and Murphy been the three scorers, the team would still have won! Bravo, gents!

September 27, 2025, Haworth, NJ: The victorious Shore AC men's 70+ team relishes the spotlight. Left to right: Jack Frame, Jim Linn, Reno Stirrat, Bill Bosmann and Peter Auteri. Not pictured: Dan Murphy.
Extra cheers erupted for the Shore AC 60+ crew, for they were comprised of not one, not two but three teams. SAC ace Mike Salamone savored his return to full running strength by ripping an awesome 19:05 to lead the "A" team. Rookie sensation Alberto Perez contributed a speedy 20:06 as #2 scorer. When Linn zoomed through the balloon archway a minute later, it left no doubt: Shore AC's M60+ "A" team had conquered all comers with an average time of 20:07 per runner.
Among the M60+ competition, the team that came closest to Shore AC's M60+ "A" team was its "B" team. With Stirrat leading the charge, doddering 69-year-old Scott Linnell shuffled across the finish line in 23:14 as second scorer, wondering how those halcyon days of effortless sub-7:00 pace could disappear so quickly. Soon thereafter, Auteri slammed the door on "B" team scoring. The team's 22:57 average bettered that of all other teams by more than 1 minute.
As for our Shore AC M60+ "C" team, it was a chance for the trio of Frame, Bosmann and Murphy to shine. That they did, vanquishing the Fleet Feet/ Essex M60+ squad by more than 1 minute to secure sixth place. Well done, lads!

Was there any drama in this race, you ask? Yes, beforehand, at least in the younger age group team competitions. Pre-race analysis projected absolute dogfights in the 50+ and 40+ team categories between Shore AC and Clifton Road Runners. But, in the end, the SAC lads prevailed with solid margins of victory.
The Shore AC M50+ crew benefitted from terrific performances by several of its renowned quinquagenarians. Seasoned harrier Ken Ginsburg spearheaded the attack, dashing through the sleepy town of Haworth at a 6-minute pace to finish in 18:37. After Salamone sailed through the arch as second scorer, sophomore sizzler Joe Demetrick streaked down the final stretch in 19:12 as #3 man. When Perez finished a minute later, there was one scoring position still open. Yeoman runner John Delaney filled that position when he barreled across the timing strip in 20:43. Fellow 50-59 harriers Bob Shields (21:18) and Chris Rinaldi (21:30), while adding backup insurance, left absolutely no doubt which 50+ team would prevail. In the end, Shore AC's margin of victory totaled 7 minutes. Outstanding accomplishment, men!
It was a similar story in the M40+ team tussle. A pre-race edge to Cliton gave way to a comfortable win by Shore AC. Our boys in white singlets were buoyed by superb performances by a couple of young bucks. Freshman phenom Chris Peterson shook off the soreness from a marathon the week before to breeze across the finish line in 17:58. The roaring crowd was just beginning to take their seats again when veteran SAC speedster Chris Moye came screeching down Haworth Avenue to wrap up his race in 18:33. Ginsburg, Demetrick and Delaney polished off team scoring while Shields and Rinaldi added the always-vital insurance. Once again, Shore AC had achieved victory with a 7-minute margin. Bravo, boys!

Shore AC's Michael Bond (at left) proudly displays his trophy for third place overall in the Haworth 5K race. His time of 15:21 put him a mere 12 seconds behind winner Issame El Jazouli (at center).
