Cockfight on the Farm: Feathers Fly as Shore AC Masters Men Fight Foes in Giralda 10K
A placid sunrise over the serene village of Madison, New Jersey, gave no hint of the tumultuous brawl about to unfold. There on the verdant corporate campus of Giralda Farms, the USATF New Jersey Association had decreed that its 10-kilometer team championship race for masters men would occur. Soon, flocks of bantams descended, garbed in their favored colors, aiming to duke it out in a high-speed slugfest.
On paper, Shore AC possessed the finest lineup across the masters age groups. Alas, misfortune struck. Just as real birds risk injury and illness while on the wing, enough of our flock in white jerseys fell from the sky that some team results were affected. Grab some sunflower seeds, alight on a seat and read all about the barnyard bedlam and how our steely-eyed clubmates fared.

Action Photographs by Reno Stirrat:
M70+ Team
Let's begin with our eldest strutters, namely the grey-feathered 70+ gentlemen. Bad news hit even before the race began. Two registered teammates were scratches. Leftover hip pain from his 50th anniversary Marine Corps Marathon rendered top-flight Reno Stirrat unable to compete. (He still contributed mightily as action photographer.) Also, retired race director Dan Murphy was unable to attend. But that still left four cantankerous Shore AC cocks who were spoiling for a fight. Peter Auteri crossed the finish line first among all 70+ team participants, wings beating madly in a time of 53:46. A man with many feathers in his cap, 81-year-old Przemek Nowicki, crossed next in 57:53, which ranked second among all 70+ team members. A mere 2 minutes later, race walker extraordinaire Barry Blake flew over the timing strip in 59:57 to seal team scoring. Rara avis Bill Bosmann flitted through the challenging course despite a gimpy wing (er, leg) to finish in 1:02:54 and provide all-important backup. This squawking quartet pecked the stuffing out of the two opposing 70+ teams, prevailing with a 50-minute margin over their two rival teams. Tweety good, gents!
M60+ Team
Calamity clipped the Shore AC men's 60+ team during the race itself. Prized power runner Alberto Perez dropped out of the race due to a respiratory issue. With our #1 harrier sidelined, the heavy weight of expectations fell on the shoulders of his three remaining teammates. Rookie surprise Maura Castro responded with a speedy 45:37 to jumpstart the team's outlook. Mangy old crow Scott Linnell flapped his decrepit wings over the finish line in 51:37 as second team scorer. When 74-year-old Auteri zoomed across the timing mat 2 minutes later, the team achieved an unexpected victory. They had beaten the five opposing teams by a margin of at least 24 minutes. Take that, pooty cat!
Shore AC also had a men's 60+ B team in this donnybrook. However, due to afore-mentioned scratches, it was an incomplete team and thus not ranked.

M50+ Team
Feathers flew wildly in the men's 50+ ring. Four teams battled for supremacy. Shore AC partisans had high hopes that their scrum masters would emerge on top. National age 60-64 50 km American record holder Rick Lee boosted those hopes with a spectacular 38:26 to spearhead the SAC M50+ team charge. Human falcon Ken Ginsburg followed with a magnificent 40:45 to fortify the team's chances. The team's third scorer, John Delaney, notched an excellent 45:20. He was followed 17 seconds later by Castro. When 2023 Comeback Runner of the Year Bob Shields whirred past the electronic timers in 46:36, the team's scoring was complete. Linnell and Bosmann added insurance. When team scores were tallied, our lads had prevailed over 2 of the 3 competing clubs. However, Clifton Road Runners had clipped our wings by a 4-minute margin and took first place. What a battle!
M40+ Team
Misfortune beset our Shore AC men's 40+ team, rendering it incomplete. Of the seven men listed on the team roster, three were unable to attend. As a consequence, we lacked the minimum of 5 runners to earn a team score. Lee, Ginsburg, Delaney and Shields gave it their best shot anyway!
In fact, only Fleet Feet / Essex had a complete men's 40+ team at Giralda. With their victory, Essex has almost completed erased the lead we enjoyed over them in the 2025 Team Grand Prix. They now lurk 1 point behind us. Victory in the 2025 Grand Prix will now boil down to the final race: the Ashenfelter 8K on Thanksgiving morning. Tune in then to see if Shore AC can hold off Fleet Feet / Essex to win the men's 40+ Grand Prix crown!
