Shore AC Battles Host Garden State in 2025 Grand Prix Opener
In the spirit of college basketball's March Madness, the USATF New Jersey Association's clubs put on a great fight in the kick-off race of the 2025 Paul Miller Auto Group Long Distance Running Team Grand Prix. Several age group battles came down to the wire -- buzzer beaters, if you will. So, plop down in your favorite couch seat, dear reader, grab a brew and savor the action!
70+ bracket:
We begin with the men's 70+ division. Among New Jersey clubs, only Shore AC was able to place septuagenarian teams on the starting line. Thus, the identity of the winning club was a foregone conclusion. Nevertheless, spectators were treated to a good show. The Shore AC M70+ A team outran half of the men's 60+ teams! Our graybeards were led by the amazing Jim Linn. Jim celebrated the start of spring by uncorking a vicious 1:10:28 to dominate his 70-74 age group by 9 minutes. Retired builder Ken Wilson constructed a rock-solid 1:20:29 performance to nail down the team's second scoring position. Avid cruiser Peter Auteri steamed into port with an excellent time of 1:21:21 to anchor the team. The legendary Bill Bosmann contributed a valuable insurance policy with his 1:46:35.
As for our Shore AC men's 70+ B team, consider this: those over age 70 rarely compete in 10-mile races. The fact that Shore AC could deploy not just one but two 70+ teams at the Garden State 10 Miler was remarkable. And get this: even more of its 70+ athletes were out of town attending the World Masters Athletics championships in Gainesville, Florida. Talk about a deep team! Jack Frame led the B team charge, marshalling his nearly 80-year-old leg muscles towards a superb 1:34:07 finish. (Jack celebrated his age-group-winning accomplishment with a massive slice of cherry pie buried in whipped cream.) Teammate Carl Richko snared second place in the same 75-79 age group with a fine 1:43:42 showing. Paul Deykerhoff completed the trio when he crossed the finish line moments later in 1:44:01. Give these age-defying lads a rousing cheer!
60+ bracket:
What a showdown the crowd witnessed in the men's 60+ cage fight. Host club Garden State Track Club assembled a potent team built around their rocket 60-year-old harrier Harold Porcher. Buoyed by talented teammates Bill Feuer and Dan Schlesinger, the GSTC M60+ team scored a magnificent average time of 1:09:00 per runner. Could Shore AC's M60+ A team beat them? Rookie sensation Alberto Perez staked the team to an exhilarating start. He made his Shore AC debut memorable, draining a spectacular logo shot of 1:06:36. Sharpshooting point guard Mike Salamone reveled in his recent return to action from the injured reserve list, connecting with a magnificent 1:08:34 shot as second team scorer. Freshman sensation Eldon Reynoso followed with a smoking 1:12:02 to close out team scoring. Close behind Eldon came another newcomer. Mike Heal notched a terrific 1:13:24 in his first race for the Good Ship Shore AC, adding all-important insurance to the team. When the team's average time was computed, the result was.....1:09:00. That's right, we had evenly matched Garden State! However, the winning team is determined by total time, not by average time. On that basis, GSTC edged out Shore AC by 1 second: 3:26:59 to 3:27:00. Oh, the agony of defeat!
Thanks to its profound depth in 70+ runners, Shore AC was able to enter B and C teams as well. (Note that, per USATF-NJ Association rules, a masters-age runner can compete on two age group teams in PMAG LDR Championship races.) 72-year old Linn led the B team stampede. Enthusiastic marathoner Jamie Button tuned up with a rapid 1:17:34. After Wilson closed out team scoring and Auteri added one level of backstop, team captain Scott Linnell ended his on-course suffering when he crossed the timing mat with an abysmal 1:24:15. The team outdueled A teams from North Jersey Masters and Raritan Valley to snag third place. Meanwhile, a Shore AC M60+ C team comprised of Frame, Richko, Deykerhoff and Bosmann collected valuable Club Grand Prix points with their sixth-place finish. Well done, gentlemen!
50+ bracket:
Let us now turn to the men's 50+ action and roll the tape. Host Garden State Track Club cemented first place with a 1:03:18 average for their top 5 finishers. However, GR Project and the Shore AC A team made it a game, approaching within 2 minutes of GSTC's team average. And, my, how GR and Shore AC grappled with each other for second place! GR barely edged out the boys in white with their 1:05:06 per runner versus Shore AC's 1:05:10. The surprise though was that Shore AC came anywhere near this close. Three new players made it all possible. Carlos Nunes wasted no time in his inaugural Shore AC race, blasting out of the cannon to win the 55-59 age group in a dazzling, team-leading 1:00:10. (Watch out, world: Carlos turns 60 next January!) Heralded rookie Luis Absalon hammered out a scintillating 1:01:29 as second team scorer, good for third in his 50-54 age group. The afore-mentioned Perez completed the newcomer trio. Salamone then flew in as fourth man. Team scoring was wrapped up when third-year SAC athlete John Delaney muscled his way through the chute in 1:09:12. John sliced an amazing 5 minutes off of his personal record! Veterans Tim McQueen and Dan Campbell provided superb insurance with their performances of 1:10:32 and 1:12:39, respectively. Bravo, boys!
Our venerable club did fashion a win of sorts in the 50+ scrum: we had the best B team. Princeton University professor Nolan McCarty guided the squad, teaching a lesson in time management with his speedy 1:10:25. Noble husband Denis Keenan (spouse to Rebecca) aced his test by solving the course in 1:11:55. Reynoso, Heal and Button proceeded to populate the remaining team scoring positions while Linnell sat in the back of the class fast asleep. Our B team finished fifth out of eight teams. Hooray!
40+ bracket:
For masters runners, competing in the 40+ category is like stepping up from a Mid-Major to a Power Four conference. Like an SEC powerhouse, Garden State Track Club ruled the roost here. Their average time of 59:39 blew all other teams out of the arena. But in the battle for second place, Shore AC flipped the script on GR Project. With Nunes and Absalon spearheading our attack, Shore AC's 40+ team benefitted from having 40+ sizzlers Patrick Anderson and Joe Maranzani on the squad. Patrick barreled down the finish chute in 1:04:53 as third team scorer. Joe came screaming in, hot on Patrick's heels, with a 1:04:57 to nail down the fourth scoring position. When Delaney crossed the finish line several minutes later, Shore AC had secured second place with an average time of 1:04:07. McCarty, McQueen, Keenan and Campbell came off the bench to seal the deal. So did chef Antonio Meza Soriano, who cooked up a tasty 1:15:01 in support of the team. Swish!
Open bracket:
We saved the most intense competition for last. Call it the Final Four. The Open division features the cream of the crop, and the young bucks in this race didn't disappoint. In keeping with the trend (in case you hadn't noticed), host Garden State Track Club won this category, too. Their A team scorched the pavement with a blistering average time of 53:35. But our Shore AC Open team seared some serious rubber of its own into the roads. In his first official LDR team race for the club, 23-year-old Troy Hill earned his new singlet with a ramjet-fast 53:09 to place third overall. Seasoned veteran Justin Scheid slam-dunked a highlight-reel 54:20 while finishing fifth overall. Sophomore sensation Kyle Spector joined in the fun, alley-ooping a crowd-pleasing 56:04 as he garnered the seventh overall spot. Recent signee Frank Novak kept the speed spree going as he sky-hooked a splendid 59:52. Happy harrier Billy Washer punctuated our Open Team onslaught with a terrific 1:00:43 to close out team scoring. Anderson, Maranzani and Meza Soriano guaranteed success with their backup contributions. Our average time of 56:48 locked in second place. Rah, team!!!
