Shore AC Lights Up Cherry Blossom 10K With Second Co-Ed Win
As cherry blossoms lit up an otherwise dreary day, the Shore Athletic Club lit up the Co-Ed team competition at the Cherry Blossom 10K. Newark's Branch Brook Park, the venue for the race, dazzled runners and spectators alike with a panoply of pink and white flowers. Likewise, Shore AC impressed with a dazzling array of harriers.
Like he did two months prior at the first Co-Ed race of 2025, Mike Salamone led the Shore AC men. With Vaporfly 4 shoes strapped to his feet, Mike rocketed through the out-and-back course in 40:57. That gave the 65-year-old an outstanding age grading of 82.98%, second best among all men in the race. Mike also won his 65-69 age group by 5+ minutes. The legendary Reno Stirrat buzzed like a hungry bee among the decked-out trees and delivered a stinging time of 44:18. Not only did Reno win his 70-74 age group by 4 minutes, but he also scored a valuable 80.61% PLP for the team. Freshman sensation Alberto Perez proved that good things come in threes. His lightning-fast 40:20 rounded out team scoring among Shore AC men with a mighty 80.37%, giving all three men 80+ age gradings. Moreover, like his two teammates, Alberto won his (60-64) age group and did so by a wide margin (nearly 4 minutes).
Meanwhile, the Shore AC women arranged a lovely bouquet of speedy results to complement their male teammates. Having warmed up with stupendous indoor track races over the winter, 28-year-old Kerry Dyke opened our ladies' contributions with a scintillating 36:04. Not only was she first female by a margin of 2 minutes, but Kerry placed seventh among all finishers. Wow! Her age grading of 79.69% helped the team immensely. Our next female scorer was a fresh face for Shore AC. Pam Ricker made her debut race for the club a memorable one, tripping the timer in 48:45 to win her 60-64 age group. Her age grading of 75.31% solidified Shore AC's team score. Our victory was sealed when 50-year-old Rebecca Keenan zoomed through the finish chute in 44:10. Her excellent 73.76% completed our flowery age grading display. Shore AC secured its blue-ribbon victory with a 2.5 percentage point margin over second place in the PLP-based team scoring. Well done, ladies and gentlemen!
Our dashing crew in white singlets featured plenty of backup to ensure its triumph. Incredibly fast elders Przemek Nowicki (54:45, 1st M80-84, 76.46%), Peter Auteri (48:32. 3rd M70-74, 76.21%) and Jack Frame (55:03, 2nd M80-84, 76.04%) collected a bounty of PLP points to energize the hive. A triplet of younger fellows tacked on sturdy supports of their own, with Joe Maranzani (38:30, 3rd M45-49, 75.18%), Jamie Button (46:32, 2nd M65-69, 74.47%) and John Delaney (42:00, 1st M55-59, 74.44%) nailing down a solid team base. John even set a personal record for the third race in a row!!! Golden girls Susan Stirrat (56:13, 73.73%) and Marie Capdevielle (53:21, 73.48%) added sweet-tasting backups on the women's side. Next for the men came Patrick Anderson (39:11, 73.27%), Harry Pino (46:48, 72.62%) and Frank Novak (36:29, 72.39%) to add more juicy insurance. Triathlete Natacha Smith (45:14, 72.02%) paddled through the moist air to a great finish and another 70+ age grading for the team. When Rob Neugass (47:30, 70.86%) and Denis Keenan (42:00 - another PR!! -- 70.67%) reached home base, the SAC colony had amassed a remarkable twenty age gradings above 70%. That was twice as many as any other running club in the race. Our honey dance continued as Leslie Nowicki (53:27, 3rd F60-64, 69.57%), Scott Linnell (51:16, 68.27%), Carl Richko (59:54, 3rd M75-79, 63.56%), Joanna Cunningham (55:59, 63.18), Luz Ravines (1:03:40, 59.95%), Kim Anicito (55:34, 55.74%) and Dan Murphy (1:10:12, 50.36%) all hummed with such harmony that the birds in the sky echoed back their melodies.
Next up, we have the THIRD Co-Ed team race of the 2025 season: the Wayne Rotary 5K race on April 26.
