Shore AC Rocks USATF-NJ 5K XC Race with a Skeleton Crew
It is always a pleasure to witness the stunning depth of the Shore Athletic Club. Saturday's USATF New Jersey Association 5K Cross Country race was a perfect example. Missing most of our top runners due to injury, race fatigue (some had run the national 10 mile race in Flint, Michigan, the day before) and vacation, we still cobbled together a team in every age group in which we compete. And we won every one of those age groups save one!
Our ladies achieved a clean sweep in this race. Every team from 60+ down to Open won! Debi Brathwaite led the charge for both the 60+ and 50+ teams despite have busted her gut the day before in the USATF Masters National 10 Mile race in Flint, MIchigan. She stormed through the final mile of this XC race to trip the timer in a superb 26:21. Fellow 65-year-old Diane Rothman close right behind in a magnificent 26:25. Susan Stirrat, who also pulled double duty this weekend with the Flint 10 miler, squeezed out a terrific 28:04 from her tired legs to complete team scoring for both the 60+ and the 50+ teams. And get this: Brathwaite, Rothman and Stirrat went 1-2-3 in the 65-69 age group! Leslie Nowicki nailed a fabulous 29:55 as backup runner for the 60+ team. Nowicki even claimed first place in the 60-64 age group!
The women's 40+ squad for Shore AC consisted of a dynamic trio that also keyed the Open team's victory. Rebecca Keenan rippled her marathon-ready leg muscles as she roared through the hilly course in a blazing 22:54. Meanwhile, Natacha Smith coaxed a marvelous 24:15 from a body that had endured a sprint triathlon the day before. Kim Anicito followed with a fine 28:25 to wrap up a dominant 40+ team win. Our ladies posted a low-low score of 8 points, well ahead of the 18 points racked up by the second-place team.
Our Shore AC women's Open team nailed their race. Kerry Dyke took time out from her busy hospital schedule to hammer out a heart-palpitating 19:41 and place first among women. Rookie sensation Danielle Wilkinson sailed over hill and dale to cross the timing strip in a speedy 20:00 flat as the #2 female finisher. Add in the contributions of Keenan, Smith, Anicito and Nowicki and you've got a commanding victory by the SAC Open crew over rival Raritan Valley. With this win, our women's Open team claws back to within 4 points of Grand Prix leader Raritan Valley. Keep up the good work, ladies!

Shore AC's good fortune extended to the men's competition as well. For starters, just as with the women's side, we had enough men to enter teams in every age group from Open through 70+. No other club was able to muster the numbers to do the same. But not only did we have superior numbers, we had outstanding talent as well!
That talent was on display with the Shore AC men's 70+ team. Former USATF Masters National Athlete of the Year, Reno Stirrat, led this squad with his usual dash. He crossed the finish line in a torrid 23:46 despite "taking it easy". After all, Reno had driven his legs to their limit the day before at the USATF Masters National 10 Mile race in Flint, Michigan. Most runners would have taken the next day off. But this ex-Marine lives the Semper Fidelis motto and runs whenever the team needs him. Longtime Shore AC member Paul Deykerhoff scored next for the team, crossing in a solid 29:13. Third man Przemek Nowicki, one month shy of his 80th birthday, sped over the finish line soon thereafter in 29:55 to complete team scoring. Venerable Jim Wright provided the team with all-important backup when he triggered the timer in 30:21. Though this 70+ quartet ran unopposed, one can believe that they would have won handily had other teams been in the mix!
By contrast, our 60+ men's team did face competition. In fact, the Clifton Road Runners made it close. They came within 3 points, scoring 12 to our 9. Spearheading the Shore AC mission was 69-year-old Hal Leddy. Finally healthy after myriad setbacks, Hal ripped a stunning 22:45. Not only did he win the 65-69 age group, but Hal also achieved the top masters age grading with 75.7%. Hal's teammate and fellow high school coach, Gary Wiesinger, found an up-tempo gear and finished in 23:21 as second team scorer. Stirrat closed out team scoring while Deykerhoff, Nowicki and Wright displaced runners from other teams in classic cross-country style. Well done, gentlemen!
The competition from Clifton proved to be too much for our men's 50+ team. They edged us by a mere 4 points, winning 31-35. Shore AC 2023 Comeback Runner of the Year, Bob Shields, got the Shore AC effort started with a bang, taking the #1 scoring position in the 50+ competition with his 21:39 blast. Race regular John Delaney came through with an excellent 23:06 as our second man. After Wiesinger crossed, it was the resilient Tim McQueen who notched the team's fourth spot with a solid 24:29. Alas for the team, Linnell was its final scorer. Had he been in shape, we might have beaten Clifton. But instead, Linnell's 15 points pulled our SAC M50+ crew down to second place.
Shore AC returned to its winning ways with the men's 40+ team. Led again by Shields, the squad took advantage of a magnificent race by Andrew Yearsley. His 22:02 earned Andrew the 3-point slot in team scoring. Leddy, Delaney and McQueen fleshed out team scoring with marvelous 5-, 7- and 9-point contributions. The team score of 26 surpassed the 43- and 51-point efforts by the competition. Way to go, guys!
Lucky you, reader: we saved the best for last. The Shore AC men's Open team knocked it out of the park! SAC hot rod Justin Scheid left all other runners in the dust with his checkered-flag 17:01 win. After Clifton's Damian Alvarado made it interesting with a terrific 17:10, Shore AC's Kyle Spector -- fresh from the NCAA circuit -- contributed a magnificent 17:25 to notch third place overall. National-level Shore AC race walker Rich Luettchau switched to his running gear and pounded out a superb 18:05, good for fourth overall. SAC's John Larkin, a high school teacher, taught a lesson in physiology with his awesome 18:41. With our top 4 guys going 1-3-4-5 in scoring, Yearsley easily wrapped up the team win with his hard-fought 14 points. Somewhere much further back, Linnell provided insurance as sixth man.
Thanks to our outstanding crew at this race, the Shore AC Open Men have taken a commanding lead in the 2024 Grand Prix with 65 points compared to 51 points for second-place Raritan Valley. But we musn't get complacent. RVRR has assembled an excellent and dedicated squadron of young harriers. They will surely take advantage of any slack we give them.
The same holds true for all of the other age group team competitions. We are in hotly contested battles in most of those categories. We were fortunate at this 5K XC meet to assemble complete teams in every one of those age groups, and to win every category save M50+. Let's flood the upcoming USATF-NJ team races with SAC singlets. Those races are:
