Shore AC Engines Roar at USATF Masters Indy Half Marathon
What better place to put the pedal to the metal than Indianapolis, home to the famous Speedway and its iconic Indy 500 race? The USATF Masters National committee obliged, selecting Indianapolis as the site for its 2024 Half Marathon. Though the pits may have reeked of Ben Gay rather than Quaker State, and the asphalt streaked with tread marks from Saucony Endorphins instead of Goodyear F1 tires, the athletes sweated just as hard.
Our Shore Athletic Club managed to enter a men's 50+ team into this far-away race. It nearly didn't happen. We were short one man right up to the day registration closed. M50+ regulars Jeff Conston and Ken Ginsburg had registered well in advance, but we needed three minimum for a team. Despite e-mailed pleas from this team captain. the #3 slot for the team remained unfilled for a week. Finally, with the registration deadline looming Wednesday night, 80-year-old Przemek Nowicki came to the rescue and signed up. At last, we had a team!
Why was it important to have a M50+ team at the Indy HM? Our boys were tied for second place in the 2024 USATF Masters National Grand Prix. By completing the Indy HM, the team could move into sole possession of second place with one race remaining, thereby positioning us better to secure that coveted second place by the end of the season.
Our brave lads came through! Conston laid down serious rubber, screeching through the 13.1-mile course in 1:26:54. Ginsburg performed some deft racing of his own, ripping across the finish line a minute later in 1:28:01. It took close to an hour before #3 man and newly minted octogenarian Nowicki took the checkered flag, but finish he did in 2:22:26 to deliver a complete team score. Remarkably, though two other teams had been declared for the race, only one other had the required minimum of 3 runners finish. Consequently, our Shore AC men's 50+ team took second place! We now have sole ownership of second place in the 2024 Grand Prix, with a 90-point lead over third-place Genesee Valley. Well done, brothers!

We also had two ladies in the race. Had we been able to muster a third, we would have entered an women's 40+ team. But our luck ran out when the Wednesday night deadline passed with only two having registered. Nevertheless, our pair of gals made the most of their trip to Indy, with each placing third in her age group! Laura DeLea rocked a scorching 1:37:05. She did this a mere 6 days after nailing a 1:38:03 in the Jersey Shore Half Marathon. Crazy! Meanwhile, Leslie Nowicki paced herself beautifully to notch a solid 2:04:59. Congratulations, ladies!
