Shore AC Masters Spark a Fire in Flint USATF 10 Miler
Late August means wildfire season in many places of the country. Members of the Shore Athletic Club spread the sparks to Flint, Michigan, lighting a virtual bonfire at the USATF Masters National 10 Mile race there on August 24. The SAC ladies scorched the hilly course and seared their names into the record books as team winners in the 50+ and 60+ categories. SAC men fanned flames of their own, placing third among 60+ and 70+ teams. The achievements set our hearts ablaze with pride!
How did this conflagration erupt, you ask? Let's look first at the Shore AC women's teams. Our 50+ ladies came to Flint seeking a high score to take the lead in the 2024 USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix. Serendipitously, their path to success opened up before the race even began because no other club entered a women's 50+ team. Hence, they were guaranteed a win just as long as all three team members finished the race.
Now, you might think that, knowing they were guaranteed victory, these ladies would slack off like a pile of doused embers. No way, Flambée! They brought the heat as if arch-rival Impala were competing in the same race. Finally healthy after nearly a year of injury rehabilitation, Ali Marzulla cut loose with a foot-singing 1:12:07 to place third in her 50-54 age group. Alysia Puma followed with a magnificent 1:17:32 to notch her team's second scoring position. It wasn't long before Maureen Massell crossed the finish line in 1:23:53 to wrap up team scoring and secure victory! With the win and the accompanying 100 grand prix points, the Shore AC women's 50+ team moves ahead of Impala with 375 points compared to their 350 points. Go, ladies, go!!!
Meanwhile, the Shore AC women's 60+ team staged a volcanic performance that left the three opposing teams in the dust. The age 60-64 USATF Masters National Runner of the Year for 2023, Suzanne La Burt, maintained her undefeated status in the 60-64 age group with a cataclysmic 1:05:24 clocking to lead the team. Suzanne's age grading equaled a mind-bending 97.2%. Often, such a stratospheric score would win the age grading competition. But not this time! Teammate Nora Cary reached high into the ionosphere, topping out at 100.2% age grading with her unbelievable 1:11:01 performance. Nora has an unbeaten 65-69 age group streak of her own in USATF Masters National races that dates back to January of 2023. With two runners already in the clubhouse before any of the opposing teams had their lead runner finish, the Shore AC 60+ gals were looking good. Deb Capko salted away the team's triumph when she sailed across the timing strip in 1:19:42. Deb's perseverance ran deeper than just gutting out a 10-mile race. She also had to endure a traveler's shop of horrors the day before, including a canceled flight and a 2.5-hour wait at the Detroit Metro Avis counter to rent a car. Had the Travel Gods successfully prevented Deb from reaching Flint, it wouldn't have made a difference in team results because first backup runner Debi Brathwaite crushed her race as well. Debi's 1:24:25 beat the number 2 runners from all 3 opposing teams. Dynamite! In fact, had Debi also faltered, the team's fifth runner, Susan Stirrat, would also have secured the team's victory. This was true despite Susan's unusual time of 1:51:09. Let's just say that Susan appreciated race management for having positioned many Port-A-John's along the course.
With the win, the Shore AC women's 60+ team took sole possession of first place in the 2024 USATF Masters National Grand Prix. All eyes now turn to the upcoming By Hook or By Crook 12K race on September 15. If our ladies win that race, they sew up first place in the Grand Prix. Stay tuned!

How about the Shore AC men's teams? What mayhem were those arsonists up to? The ringleader of the 60+ team, Henry Notaro, felt incited to ignite TNT when his beloved van was declared unfit for travel earlier in the week. He took out his frustration on the course, pummeling it into submission with his 1:03:22 to get the team rolling. Another experienced traveler, Kevin Dollard, included Flint on his Midwest family tour and made it pay off. Kevin ripped a superb 1:10:20, proving that he still has long distance races in his legs. Alas, expected third scorer -- and Shore AC 2023 Rookie of the Year -- Miles Hersey had to cancel his trip to Flint due to injury. That left the woeful team captain, Scott Linnell, as third scorer for the team. Scott's 2024 funk continued. His pitiful 1:26:28 might not have helped an 80+ team, let alone a 60+ team. Fortunately, there were only 3 men's 60+ teams in the race, thus handing Shore AC a spot on the podium. The corresponding 80 grand prix points solidified our hold on second place in the 2024 Grand Prix. A strong showing at the next national race -- the By Hook or By Crook 12K on September 15 -- might be enough to cement second place in the Grand Prix. There is a chance that we could even claw back into a tie for first place with Atlanta. We shall see!
As for our much-respected septuagenarians, they were eager to make up for lost time and put more points on the 2024 Grand Prix scoreboard. Sensational rookie and music lover Rick Boyle burned the stage Korean style, energizing the crowd with a superb 1:12:10. His amazing performance earned Rick third place in a tremendously competitive 70-74 age group. Hot on Rick's heels came the legendary Reno Stirrat, who charred the finish line with a fiery 1:12:39. Team scoring reached completion when venerable Ken Wilson motored down Saginaw Avenue and across the timing strip in 1:26:20. When results were tallied, the Shore AC men's 70+ team stood proudly on the podium in third place. The 80 points that they earned vaulted them from 10th to 4th place in the 2024 Grand Prix. Let's see what they can accomplish at next month's By Hook or By Crook 12K race!
