Shore AC Scores Second Place in a Co-Ed Squeaker
Shore AC partisans were biting their nails as the Terri Roemer Paramus 10K race got underway. Could our small crew preserve Shore AC's narrow lead in the 2024 USATF-NJ Co-Ed Team Grand Prix? Our advantage over Fleet Feet Essex was only 4 points. That lead would evaporate if Fleet Feet won and we placed third or worse. We knew that Fleet Feet had a strong team. Furthermore, we were missing our 90% age grading superstars. Did we have enough to squeak out a second-place finish?
Shore AC 64-year-old ace Mike Salamone threw down his gauntlet for the team. He spearheaded our charge with a vicious 82.88% age grading based on a scintillating time of 40:38. How fortunate we were that Mike had recently been cleared by his doctor to resume racing after a many-month bout with an aggravated Achilles tendon. A couple of young female rockets leaped into the breach behind Mike. Kerry Dyke scored a superb 78.45% age grading in winning the women's race with a magnificent time of 37:52. Michelle Navarro nailed a terrific 77.64% AG while finishing second among women in 38:34. 2023 Shore AC Comeback Runner of the Year Bob Shields continued his amazing recovery from a long-term illness, ripping a stunning 41:08. That translated to a roaring age grading of 76.05. Another medical marvel, Harry Pino, put his stent-filled heart and soul into this race to gut out a fantastic 46:49, thereby contributing an age grading of 72.64%. Substitute team captain Maureen Massell wrapped up team scoring when she crossed in 49:44 to add a strong 72.62% AG. Shore AC enjoyed strong backup with excellent contributions from Ken Wilson (50:29; 72.38% AG), John Delaney (43:25; 71.42% AG), Lindsay Bergman (45:10; 69.76% AG) and Luz Ravines (59:22; 66.46% AG). Hooray to our 10 mighty heroes!!!
When team results were tallied, Fleet Feet Essex stood victorious as expected, having achieved an average age grading of 77.58%. Our Shore AC squad grabbed second place in a squeaker, just edging out Clifton by scores of 76.71% to 76.52%. Our crew had succeeded in keeping Shore AC first in the Grand Prix!
With our lead in the 2024 USATF-NJ Co-Ed Team Grand Prix reduced to only a 2-point margin over Fleet Feet Essex, a showdown now looms. The Grand Prix winner will be decided in the final co-ed team race. That event, namely the All School Special Needs 5K race, will take place on Sunday, December 8. Stay tuned, sports fans!
