Apologies to Lindsay Bergman (44:30), who flew by before I realized it was her and thus has no picture below. Apologies as well to the un-pictured Susan Stirrat, who bravely walked the course with a broken back.
Many thanks to Reno Stirrat for allowing his photographs to appear here.

Shore AC Masters Ladies Hurdle Water Hazards to Win Steeplechase 10K
The week before the race, more than one person asked, "Will there be hurdles and water pits in the Steeplechase 10K race? I haven't trained for them!" You could feel their relief when informed that "Steeplechase" simply refers to the cancer wing of a nearby hospital that benefits from the race.
Nevertheless, we can still have fun with the name. With rain finally having arrived in New Jersey after a month of drought, puddles formed along roadsides. Voila, water pits! Avoiding these hazards meant hurdling in a way. And how, you ask, did our Shore AC harriers fare with these challenges? Like fine-tuned steeds!
With this year's Steeplechase 10K serving as the USATF New Jersey Association's masters women 10K championships, we brought a herd of spirited lady mustangs. The incomparable Suzanne La Burt led the charge. She scorched the rolling course in a fiery 39:56, placing second among all women at age 61! Suzanne topped all runners in the race with a scintillating 96.25% age grading. Oh, and she came within 32 seconds of the American age group record. (The record of 39:24 was set in 2015 by Christine Kennedy.) WOW! Next to cross for the Shore AC women's 60+ team was the indomitable Nora Cary. Though she turns 70 in just 6 months, she ran faster (45:38, 7:21 per mile average) than most people half her age. Plus, she scored an insane 93.89% in age grading. And get this: on what you could say was an off day for Nora, she still came within 19 seconds of the American 70-74 age group record for 10K! Watch out when Nora turns 70 in March!!! Our W60+ squad wrapped up the team win with a flourish when club veteran Diane Rothman galloped over the timing mat in 48:16. Diane's magnificent age grading of 85.11% placed her fourth among all runners in the race. Next came our three insurance policies. Fresh from a joyous experience running the Sydney Marathon Down Under, Debi Brathwaite willed her sore legs across the finish line in 52:23. It was then Leslie Nowicki who drew the crowd to their feet as she aced the course in 54:29. It was the first time that Leslie had ever exceeded 70% in age grading! Not long thereafter, Luz Ravines put a challenging week behind her by beating the course into submission with her solid 56:33 performance. Hats off to our W60+ for a thrilling 48-minute margin of victory plus a trio of backups that beat all but 2 of the runners from the opposing 3 teams.
Though the competition stiffened in the women's 50+ team category, our Shore AC ladies still overwhelmed them. With La Burt and Cary pacing the "A" team, newly minted 50-year-old Natacha Smith contributed a splendid 45:52 to zip up team scoring. This trio fashioned a 13-minute margin of victory over increasingly potent Clifton. Rothman served as a victory-cementing backup.
Meanwhile, a Shore AC W50+ "B: team composed of Brathwaite, Nowicki, Ravines and the walking-wounded insurance policy named Susan Stirrat (1:54:48) topped the "A" teams from three other clubs. Brava, ladies!
The closest matchup of the day came in the women's 40+ team category. The Clifton Road Runners assembled an impressive squad. Their average time of 45:03 represented the best showing by any New Jersey club other than Shore AC or Garden State in at least 4 years. But it was no match for our ladies. Our W40+ crew compiled a team average of 42:51 to prevail once again. Karen dos Santos spearheaded our efforts with her excellent 40:39. Karen might not agree with my "excellent" characterization, her time being 2 minutes slower than what she achieved on the same course two years ago. But recovery from a long-term injury takes time! The ascendant Rebecca Keenan crushed her 45-49 competition as she rolled to a 43:24 Formula One style victory. It was in fact a personal record for Rebecca! Barely a minute later, Lindsay Bergman rang the bell on team scoring when she crossed in 44:30. Lindsay's virtuoso performance placed her second in a highly competitive 40-44 age group. After Smith check in as first backup runner, new club member Diana Stavrou made a delightful debut with her impressive 51:57. Welcome, Diana! Let us not forget our third backup for the W40+ team: Susan Stirrat! Prevented from running by a small fracture in her backbone, Susan walked the entire 10-kilometer course, keeping another injured lady company. That's true team spirit for you!
