Land Ho! Shore AC's Ship Comes In at By Hook or By Crook 12K
Cheers erupted along the wharf as The Good Ship Shore AC docked and unloaded its treasures from a 12-kilometer voyage. There were medals galore! They came in all three primary colors: gold, silver and bronze. In fact, SAC masters teams scored hardware in every age group they contested in the USATF Masters National aspect of the By Hook or By Crook race. Plus, Shore AC piled up points in the USATF-NJ Grand Prix with a multitude of teams. As you can imagine, a plethora of SAC athletes stood proudly on the podium in their respective age groups. It was thrilling enough to make a sailor take a dip in the ocean -- as several of our Shore AC runners did after the race!
To document all that was accomplished by our Shore AC athletes would take more time and effort than this feeble team captain can devote to the cause. Instead, allow me to highlight a few key team accomplishments that relate to the 2024 USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix.
60+ Women: Our W60+ A team clinched first place in the Grand Prix with their win at Hook or Crook. They bested arch rival Liberty Track Club in one of the more dramatic duels of the day. Brava, ladies!
50+ Women: By taking second place at Hook or Crook, our W50+ team clinched second place in the 2024 Grand Prix. They actually lead the Grand Prix, but powerhouse Impala will likely reclaim the lead at the upcoming Indy Half Marathon. Shore AC may have one last chance to retake first place at the final Grand Prix race, namely the 5K XC meet in Boulder.
40+ Women: Our 40+ ladies got on the scoreboard in the 2024 Grand Prix with their second-place finish at Hook or Crook. With two races remaining, they can still make a run at a podium finish.
70+ Men: When Reno Stirrat turned 70 in April, he made it his mission to transform the Shore AC men's 70+ team from a no-show into a Grand Prix contender. Thanks to a sweet victory at Hook or Crook, our M70+ crew has moved into third place in the Grand Prix. With two races remaining, time will tell whether our septuagenarians can hold the bronze medal position or even claw their way up to silver status.
60+ Men: Fate has certainly frustrated the Shore AC men's 60+ squad this year. After a rip-roaring two-win start to the 2024 Grand Prix, with predictions of a dynasty unfolding, we've hit a rough patch. Injuries and other priorities swept away our top four runners for much of the year. But thanks to legendary depth in our 60+ ranks, we still managed a bronze-medal podium finish at Hook or Crook. As a result, we clinched second place in the 2024 Grand Prix. Hooray!
50+ Men: Steady as she goes! Our men's 50+ team had been slowly gathering points in Grand Prix races (Richmond, Atlanta and Dedham) such that, coming into the Hook or Crook race, they stood in fourth place. With their marvelous second-place performance at Hook/Crook, the guys move up to third place in the GP. In fact, they lurk a mere 5 points behind Genesee Valley for second place. Let's see what our boys can do in the remaining two races!

Suzanne La Burt broke the American record for women aged 60-64 in the 12K distance. Her net time of 48:39 eclipsed the previous mark of 48:54 that was set by Katherine Martin in 2014. Suzanne also achieved the second-best age grading in the Hook or Crook race with 95.9%. In addition, she won her 60-64 age group by a margin of 2 minutes over rival Mary Cass.
Nora Cary was the only person to top Suzanne in age grading. Nora made it two national races in a row exceeding 100 % PLP. She scored 100.7% by crushing the 12K course in 51:41. She placed first in her 65-69 age group by a margin of 5 minutes.
Jessica Francis made her first USATF Masters National race memorable, finishing third among women with a jet-powered time of 45:53. She also placed first overall among women in the USATF-NJ state-level competition.
Reno Stirrat nailed a victory in his 70-74 age group, prevailing over his worthy competition by a solid 95-second margin.
Laura DeLea, Donna Grocki and Diane Rothman all placed third in their respective 5-year age groups in the USATF Masters National competition.
Emma Cary placed second among women in the USATF-NJ competition. She was not far behind teammate Jessica Francis, finishing in 46:17.
