Haworth Heroics: Shore AC Averts "DANGER" in 5K Race
The S.O.S. reverberated throughout the galaxy. "DANGER! DANGER!" it warned. Like the small crew from the 1960s TV series Lost in Space, Shore AC sign-ups for the Haworth 5K race were sparse. Far too skimpy, in fact, to enter an Open Women's team or a 50+ or 40+ Masters Men's team. The robot -- or in this case the team captain -- was panicking. Our opportunity to win the 2024 USATF-NJ LDR Grand Prix in those categories might evaporate like water on the moon.
Voyagers know: outer space is vast. It took time for any response to arrive. And when responses arrived, they amounted to a trickle. But by race eve, just enough Shore AC stalwarts had signed up that we could barely enter teams. Hooray!
WOpen Team:
Moreover, though few in number, our SAC astronauts had the right stuff. Take for example the six ladies who comprised our Open Women's team. All were over age 40. None were considered our top runners. Nevertheless, they won! Rebecca Keenan led the team on its mission, applying her marathon training to achieve a fabulous time of 20:46. Physical therapist Karyn Baig squeezed a solid 22:31 from her jet-lagged body to help the cause. Our third and final quadragenarian, Kim Anicito, came through for the team in 26:42 despite having an off year. Two seconds later, 62-year-old Luz Ravines powered through the finish chute in 26:44 as the team's fourth scorer. Shortly thereafter, 61-year-old Leslie Nowicki sailed over the timing mat in 27:39 to seal the team's victory. And to demonstrate team spirit, 69-year-old Susan Stirrat shook off the pain from a back injury suffered earlier in the week to walk the 3.1-mile course in 1:00:14 and provide all-important backup. The team's cumulative score of 2:04:24 bested second-place Clifton's time by a mere 59 seconds. On top of that, our dynamic women leapfrogged Raritan Valley for the lead in the 2024 USATF-NJ LDR Grand Prix. Brava, ladies!
M70+ Team:
Our motif of few but proud carried over to the men's teams. Though you could count our male senior citizens on one hand, they were some of the most experienced in the galaxy. Chief among them was Jim Linn, a nationally renowned distance runner who had just transferred to Shore AC from the New Jersey Pacers running club. Jim made his debut memorable, ripping a sensational 21:02 to place first among 70+ men and second in age grading with 85.1%. Opposing teams knew they were in serious trouble when Reno Stirrat sped across the threshold just 8 seconds later in a magnificent time of 21:10. They cried "U.N.C.L.E." (yes, another 1960s TV series) when teammate Ken Wilson slammed the door on team scoring at 23:41 into the race. Jim, Reno and Ken went 1-2-3 in the 70-74 age group. What a cataclysmic explosion of force! Needless, to say, the Shore AC 70+ men's team won by a light-year.
M60+ Team:
The above-mentioned septuagenarians drew double duty. They carried our age 60+ men's team to victory as well! With Linn and Stirrat paving the way, Scott Linnell contributed what for him counts as progress: a clocking of 22:43, his best so far this year. It was enough for the team to outrun second-place Clifton by 2 minutes. Had Linnell faltered, teammate Harry Pino was there -- stitched-up heart and all -- to ensure team victory with his solid 23:19 in backup. Wilson also offered a backstop. Hooray for our champion M60+ team!
M50+ Team:
Fans of the USATF-NJ Paul Miller Auto Group LDR Grand Prix know that the Clifton Road Runners have assembled a potent squad of young masters men over the past several years. Their recruiting is paying dividends this year, as they took the lead in M50+ team competition on day one and haven't looked back. We hoped to start reversing the trend at Haworth. Alas, the considerable firepower that we brought wasn't enough. Clifton won again. But we made it close. Ken Ginsburg led our charge with a stellar 19:21. Bob Shields continued his remarkable comeback from serious illness with a scintillating 20:32. 64-year-old Mike Salamone notched another step in his recovery from an Achilles issue by crossing the timing strip in 20:38 to complete a tempo run. Mike DiLeva, whose racing has also been limited this year by injury, uncorked a solid 22:31 as fourth team scorer. Linnell polished off team scoring while Pino and USATF volunteer extraordinaire Chris Rinaldi (23:59) added backup insurance. Rinaldi's performance was especially gratifying, as he battles back from the effects of a tragic fall late last year that nearly took his life. Go, Chris! Go, team!
M40+ Team:
You might wonder how, if Clifton has such a good 50+ team, they don't also hold the lead in the M40+ team Grand Prix? The answer: they failed to enter a team in one of the races. By contrast, our men's 40+ team has attended every race this year. They extended their attendance streak to Haworth. Unfortunately, their valiant efforts were not enough to conquer Clifton. Super spaceman Joe Maranzani spearheaded the Shore AC M40+ effort with his stupendous 18:24. Teammates Ginsburg, Shields, Salamone and DiLeva completed team scoring while Rinaldi delivered backup insurance. Their second-place performance kept Shore AC in the lead of the M40+ Grand Prix by a score of 61 to Clifton's 54. Keep it up, boys!
