Shore AC Masters Men Lasso Prime Podium Positions at Giralda Farms 10K
There was a bright golden haze in the sky when the day dawned over Giralda Farms in Madison, New Jersey. Runners not warming up for their 10 kilometer race were standing like statues in the port-a-john line. You'd think, given these references to the musical Oklahoma, that we all had a beautiful feeling everything was going our way. After all, our expectations are always as high as an elephant's eye.
But, like in a frontier town, our numbers were few. And trouble lurked around the bend. Our rivals from other territories had brought their big guns. Could we prevail in this masters men's team race?
Well, one thing was for sure: our town elders -- the Shore AC men's 70+ posse -- would win their skirmish. They ruled the 2024 USATF-NJ team competition for a reason: overwhelming talent. Reno Stirrat led the attack, firing the first shot with a stellar time of 45:38. He achieved his 7:21 per mile pace despite lingering soreness from the Marine Corps Marathon two weeks prior. It wasn't long before Peter Auteri came thundering through the finish chute in 49:19 to place second in the 70-74 age group. No sooner had the cheering townspeople begun settling down that triathlete extraordinaire Ken Wilson darted like a barracuda across the timing strip. His 50:03 result seized third place among 70-74 year olds and completed team scoring. What's more, 80-year-old Przemek Nowicki subsequently wowed the crowd when he clocked an amazing 53:58. His time as backup man beat the rest of the 70+ field save one!
In stark contrast, doubt brooded over the outcome of the men's 60+ team competition like a giant cumulonimbus cloud. Would a cruel wind called Fleet Feet Essex come sweeping down the plain and blow us away? They certainly possessed the firepower. But administrative misfortune seems to have befallen Essex. One of their 60+ aces did not appear in their team results. As a result, the Shore AC men's 60+ team unexpectedly took the win. 2023 Rookie of the Year Miles Hersey spearheaded our foray with a splendid 42:27. After Stirrat and Wilson crossed to complete team scoring, Scott Linnell rode his old nag into the corral in 50:05 to provide a feeble backstop. Hail to the victors!
Shore AC also had a men's 60+ B team in the fray. Nowicki carried the flag, followed by two legends of the sport. Highly admired race director Dan Murphy put aside his "Joey Bagadonuts" alias so he could score for his club in this race, and he did so with a solid 1:01:40 finish. Famous race walker Barry Blake followed soon after in 1:03:17, testing his running muscles for a possible return to open-gait competition. Our gallant trio placed sixth out of seven 60+ teams. Well done, gents!
As for the men's 50+ team competition, we saw the tornado coming. The Clifton M50+ company has gotten stronger and stronger over the course of two years. They whirled down Main Street and sent us scrambling for cover as they spun on to victory. But we closed ranks behind Clifton and nailed down second place emphatically! Rookie sensation Joe Demetrick set the tone, driving a 40:44 stake in the ground to anchor the team. After Hersey checked in as second team scorer, 2023 Shore AC Comeback Runner of the Year Bob Shields clamped down with a magnificent 42:34. The ubiquitous John Delaney then came galloping down the chute to rope a superb 43:54. But an M50+ team requires five runners minimum, and only four had completed the race for Shore AC. It seemed to take forever, but eventually Linnell trotted across the timing strip to wrap up team scoring and secure second place. Murphy and Blake contributed all-important insurance. Yeowza!
The Clifton twister wreaked havoc in the men's 40+ tilt as well. But here Shore AC fashioned even fiercer resistance, thanks to 44-year-old Chris Moye. This busy dad and XC coach dug in his spurs and hoofed out a tremendous 39:09 to get the team rolling. Demetrick, Shields, Delany and Auteri all scorched the asphalt to collectively pound out a second-place M40+ team accomplishment. Hooray, lads!
In summary, Shore AC garnered two team wins and two team places. Oh, what a (fairly) beautiful day!
