Shore AC Splurges on a Rainy Day at Ashenfelter 8K
When you "save it for a rainy day", you can end up with a lot to spend on that rainy day. And spend we did at the Ashenfelter 8k race on a cold and damp Thanksgiving morning. A pack of 37 Shore AC runners showed up to disburse their stores of fitness, which they had previously built up -- "saved" -- over hours and hours of training. It paid off handsomely! Thanks to podium finishes by 11 of our 12 teams, we (unofficially) nailed down first place in EVERY CATGEORY in which we competed in the USATF-NJ Paul Miller Auto Group LDR Grand Prix!
Of course, our age 60+ women set the standard. These outstanding ladies, who won this year's USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix, went 1-2 with their "A" and "B" teams at Ashenfelter. Suzanne La Burt, winner of the 2024 USATF Masters National Individual Grand Prix in the 60-64 age group, skewered the course with a blistering 32:13 to get the "A" team rolling. Teammate Nora Cary, winner of not only the 2024 USATF Masters National Individual Grand Prix in the 65-69 age group but also the Masters National LDR Athlete of the Year Award, lit up the leafy neighborhoods of Glen Ridge with a scintillating 34:56. Nora's 97.10% age grading topped the list for this race. (Suzanne was a close second with 94.60%.) The role of third and final scorer was played expertly by Diane Rothman. Her time of 38:38 delivered a massive 27-point margin of victory over the second-place team. Globetrotting marathoner Debi Brathwaite contributed a magnificent 40:35 as insurance runner to guarantee team success. Brava, ladies!
Our 60+ women's "B" team was proud to finish in second place. Leslie Nowicki spearheaded the charge of this trio. Her terrific 42:01 ranked Leslie third in the 60-64 age group. Susan Stirrat, winner of last year's USATF Masters National Individual Grand Prix for 65-69 Women, scored next for the team with a solid 45:25. A few seconds later, Luz Ravines zipped up team scoring when she hustled across in 45:44. Remarkably, our "B" team beat the third-place W60+ team by 21 minutes. Awesome, gals!
The headwinds blew much stronger in the women's 50+ competition. After all, we faced arguably the best team in the country in Garden State Track Club. They prevailed, but Shore AC made it tantalizingly close! The average time for our W50+ "A" team scorers was only 13 seconds slower than GSTC's. With La Burt trailblazing first, Christie Nie followed close behind with an outstanding time of 33:00. Rebecca Keenan wrapped up team scoring when she blew through the finish chute is 34:40. While Cary served as first insurance runner, Crissa Thurman contributed a magnificent 36:16 as second backup. Thanks to these superb performances, our W50+ "A" squad sewed a 10-minute cushion over third-place Fleet Feet / Essex.
Just as with the W60+ category, Shore AC also entered a W50+ "B" team. Considering that it consisted entirely of ladies aged 60 or older, they achieved great success. The quartet of Rothman, Brathwaite, Stirrat and Ravines placed 5th out of 10 W50+ teams. In fact, they lagged Raritan Valley's solid "A" team by only 3 minutes. Kudos, gals!
Ashenfelter always draws a potent field. The women's 40+ team competition was Exhibit A. Garden State Track Club brought a slew of talented young masters ladies, enough to populate two teams. We countered with a superb single team. Ace Kiera Russo got our party started with a scorching 30:32. This ranked Kiera 7th overall and 2nd among masters-age women. Karen Dos Santos coaxed a speedy 31:59 from legs still worn by the Richmond Half Marathon less than 2 weeks prior. Adding in Nie, Keenan, and Thurman as 3rd, 4th and 5th scorers gave us a terrific second-place finish, thus splitting the GSTC "A" and "B" teams. Brava, ladies!
Lady Luck definitely smiled on our Open Women's team. The roster included 7 runners. However, 2 didn't show, leaving us the bare minimum of 5 athletes. Could our depleted crew work the same magic as our W40+ team and split the GSTC "A" and "B" teams? Michelle Navarro got us started on the right foot by pounding out a ferocious 30:29. After Russo flew across the timing strip as second team scorer, Emma Cary nailed a spectacular 31:26 to notch the third scoring position. Thirty seconds later, Dos Santos galloped home to give us four in the barn. All four ladies had finished in under 32 minutes. But what of the #5 gal? It was 61-year-old Leslie Nowicki. Historically, she was average at best, with roughly 9-minute pace and age gradings in the 60's. But this year, Leslie has upped her game! Her 42:01 equated to an 8:27 pace and a 72.54% age grading. It was easily enough for our Shore AC Open Women team to beat GSTC's "B" team and achieve the split. Hooray, ladies!

What of the guys, you ask? Given that they constituted the majority of runners in the Ashenfelter 8K race, one could say that it was "raining men". And there was no doubt that we were "absolutely soaking wet", as go the lyrics in the 1982 hit song.
Our men's 70+ competition probably figured that we indeed fell from the sky, as our three scorers on the M70+ team beat all eleven runners from the three opposing teams. The legendary Reno Stirrat initiated our gully-washer with a 36:33 tsunami. Peter Auteri brought in a king tide, rushing down the finish chute in 38:47. Fate was sealed when 80-year-old Przemek Nowicki gushed over the timing strip at 41:23 to anchor the team's victory. Solid insurance was provided by accomplished race walker Barry Blake. Competing in his first race as a 70-year-old, Barry celebrated with a 51:01. Well done, lads!
We certainly felt the storm in the 60+ field. Fleet Feet / Essex launched a geyser of a team and hosed our "A" and "B" teams. The good news, however, is that our "A" and "B" squads took second and third place in a field of seven M60+ teams. Rookie rocket Eldon Reynoso turned on the spigots for the "A" team, cascading a fast 35:00 down on our foes. After Stirrat mixed in his great result as second scorer, our NYC Marathon team organizer Jamie Button surfed a screaming line to finish in 37:45. Team captain Scott Linnell oozed across the finish line in 38:17 to add a backstop. Our good fortune kept flowing as members of the Shore AC men's 60+ "B" team began to dart down the finish chute. Auteri acted as its first wave. A partially healed Rob Neugass tossed caution into the sea as he cast a solid 40:22. Nowicki completed team scoring while Blake supported his teammates with all-important insurance. How sweet it was that the "B" team could join the "A" team on the M60+ podium!
The competitive intensity rose to tropical storm strength in the men's 50+ division. Not only did Garden State Track Club send in a cyclone, but Freedom-GR Project spun up a nor'easter as well. Shore AC couldn't match those gale-force winds. Nevertheless, they rotated through the 8K course plenty fast enough to place third by a comfortable margin. Ken Ginsburg manned the bow, busting through waves like a seasoned mariner to secure a fierce 32:10. Nolan McCarty trimmed the team's sails with alacrity on his way to a splendid 33:39. Scott Isgett piloted from the crow's nest as he sailed to a 34:30. After Reynoso cruised through the finish chute, Brian Hill (the father) lashed the team boat to the docks with his fifth-man score of 35:23. Mike DiLeva dropped anchor at 35:57 to offer insurance. Button, Linnell and Neugass roped in additional backup protection. Ahoy, mates!
Stepping into the men's 40+ field of play meant plunging headlong into roaring whitewater. Just as with the M50+ maelstrom, Garden State Track Club and Freedom-GR Project rowed the hardest and took first and second place. But in this 40+ swirl, Fleet Feet / Essex rode the rapids adroitly as well. Could we outmaneuver them for third place? Masters phenom Marc Blanco took the lead oar position and pulled out a gigantic 28:42 to get our effort started. Swashbuckling seaman Joe Maranzani strained every muscle to stroke an incredible 30:03. Third chair Chris Moye paddled like mad and gutted out an amazing 31:19. When fourth and fifth sailors Ginsburg and McCarty burst past the rapids, the team score was settled. Shore AC had beaten Fleet Feet / Essex for the lone remaining podium spot! Longtime SAC member Antonio Meza Soriano added backup with his solid 36:33, joining Isgett and DiLeva in the insurance role. Row on, boys!
Riding the trajectory of energetic natural forces brings us to the EF5 tornado, also known as the Open Men competition. Garden State Track Club enlisted enough young men to declared both "A" and "B" teams in this category. Could the Shore AC Open Men team duplicate what their sisters accomplished and split the GSTC teams? Brian Hill (the son) spearheaded our Herculean effort with a gargantuan 25:02, good for fourth place overall in the race. Veteran ballistic missile Justin Scheid ignited his afterburners and reached orbit with a powerful 25:52. Four second later, Zack Greenberg made a spectacular debut on the LDR circuit by blasting a white-hot 25:56. Excitement reached a fever pitch among Shore AC partisans when race-circuit regular Mark Minervini zoomed down the final stretch in a magnificent 27:38 as fourth man. When Blanco crossed a minute later, the mission was accomplished: Shore AC had achieved the split once again! Newcomer Frank Novak contributed a superb 30:07 in a backup role, running his first race in a Shore AC singlet. Great to have you aboard, Frank! Maranzani, Moye and Meza Soriano also played backstop. Congratulations on an awesome second-place finish, guys!
